Utility:
Natural sandstone is a popular building material since ancient times, being easily carved. It has been widely used around the world to build temples, houses and other buildings. It is also used for artistic purposes to create ornamental fountains and statues.
Chemical Properties:
The composition of the sandstone is quite similar to that of the sand, which essentially consists of quartz. Natural cementing material that binds sand together with rock is usually composed of silicon, calcium carbonate or iron oxide. The percentage constitution of each component element varies between certain limits, and is as follows:
Cuart (SiO2): 93-94%
Aluminum oxide (Al2O3): 1.4-1.5%
Bauxite (Fe2O3): 1.5% - 1.6%
Calcium Oxide (CaO): 0.8% - 0.9%
Sodium Oxide (Na2O) & Potassium Carbonate (Kro): 1.0% - 1.2%
Loss of ignition (LOI): 1.0% - 1.2%
Peroxidite (MgO): 0.2-0.25%
Physical properties:
Mineralogy: a wide variety of quartz stone fragments of up to 75%.
Water absorption: The water absorption capacity is not more than 1.0%.
Texture: medium grain.
Hardness: Between 6 and 7 on the Mohs Scale from 2.32 to 2.42 Kg / m3.
Porosity: the porosity of the tiles is almost negligible. Thus, the sandstone is almost impermeable.
Compressive strength: ranges from 365 to 460 Kg / sqm.
